Momisms

It would be so easy for me just to go make the beds.  And it takes 10 times as long to get them to make the beds.  But that’s my job.  It’s not my job to make the bed, it’s my job to make them make the bed.

Be Green
Man_BeGreenAs moms it seems we always try to bite off more than we can chew, so when it comes time to talk about going green, we think we need to do it all.  But one small step at a time can make a big difference.  The tie between “going green” and economizing seems very close.  Here are what some of our moms are doing!

Going Green Bit by Bit

“Recycling”
Carly

“The green thing I am doing is bringing my own shopping bags. It took me 3 weeks or so before I started remembering every time but I feel so much better about not wasting all those bags and unloading my groceries is so much better because there are less bags.”
Susan S

“I am doing a couple of things to do my part. I purchased insulated bags that I take shopping with me, to eliminate the need to use grocery bags. Another thing that I did was invest in a water filtration system for the entire house to eliminate our need to purchase bottled water. With this system I now use green cleaning products and soap, and no longer purchase for example "Tide" for the washing machine. This eliminates the use of potential harmful, harsh chemicals that are not good for our environment.”
Nataiya

“I use my Fry's reusable grocery bags.  They are easier to carry, insulated and I get a little money back from the store every time I use them.”
Tami

“Our family has stopped buying dryer sheets. Instead, I take a washcloth and spray it with a mixture of 1/2 water 1/2 liquid fabric softener.  Then toss that washcloth in. I keep about 4 washcloths for this purpose and toss them in the wash after they are used.  It saves on lots of garbage being thrown away.”

Recycling Ideas for Busy Moms

Making the most of what we have to economize and cut down on waste...
Sometimes all you have to do is choose what is convenient for you and make it easy & convenient for the rest of the family.  Here are some ideas...

Office:

  • Buy recycled paper, print on both sides, recycle again.
  • White paper is easier to recycle using less chemicals in the process.
  • Make recycling bins available in your home for:  paper, plastic, metal.  Keep them easily accessible and label them for convenience.
  • Use paper bags or cardboard boxes to collect unwanted junk mail and office papers.
  • Reuse old papers for notes, grocery lists, etc on the other/blank side.
  • Save unused envelopes from bills, etc to store receipts, etc.
  • Proof read before you print.  Use smaller font & wider margins so you can fit more content on a page.
  • Ink & toner cartridges:  buy them remanufactured, recycle them, refill them.
  • Recycle or reuse old newspapers or magazines.  Put them in the recycle pile, leave them for someone else to use, donate them to libraries or senior centers.

Kitchen:

  • Reuse your morning coffee cup or use a mug.
  • Spread coffee grounds in garden to add extra nutrients to the soil.
  • Grind lemon rinds in garbage disposal to keep it smelling fresh.
  • Reuse plastic fruit cups for kid’s painting projects.
  • Use plastic butter or whipped topping containers to store your leftovers.
  • Limit the amount of disposable cups you use by writing the users name on it or identifying it in some other way.
  • plastic dishes, forks and cups can actually be washed in the dishwasher and reused.  Check labels to make sure.
  • Use cloth napkins & and tablecloths instead of paper.
