“Recycling”

“The green thing I am doing is bringing my own shopping bags. It took me 3 weeks or so before I started remembering every time but I feel so much better about not wasting all those bags and unloading my groceries is so much better because there are less bags.”

“I am doing a couple of things to do my part. I purchased insulated bags that I take shopping with me, to eliminate the need to use grocery bags. Another thing that I did was invest in a water filtration system for the entire house to eliminate our need to purchase bottled water. With this system I now use green cleaning products and soap, and no longer purchase for example "Tide" for the washing machine. This eliminates the use of potential harmful, harsh chemicals that are not good for our environment.”

“I use my Fry's reusable grocery bags. They are easier to carry, insulated and I get a little money back from the store every time I use them.”

“Our family has stopped buying dryer sheets. Instead, I take a washcloth and spray it with a mixture of 1/2 water 1/2 liquid fabric softener. Then toss that washcloth in. I keep about 4 washcloths for this purpose and toss them in the wash after they are used. It saves on lots of garbage being thrown away.”

“We do our best to recycle what we know is recycleable and the weekly recycle pick up is a great motivator. Also there’s a big recycle bin for paper at the school, so I do save and drop all that off. We have used green laundry & cleaning products for years. We buy large concentrated cleaners and add water ourselves. My plan is to start one new idea and get it to become a habit in our family. When that happens, I’ll find another new idea we can adapt to our lifestyle. The first thing I want to start is using recycleable shopping bags at the grocery. Since Christmas I’ve been buying those bags to put gifts in. They are less expensive than the decorative paper gift bags and are a gift in themselves.”

“At our book club we now bring books we’ve finished reading and lay them out on a table for others to pick up and read. This is an easy way for us to re-use again & again the books we’ve purchased.”

“Nothing special in the green thing (more because of economy than philosophy) - recycling waste, using back of paper in my computer printer, time-of-use electric plan (running DW and doing as much cooking off-hours as possible), laundry in cold water, tried composting but didn't really find it useful, wearing clothes multiple times, short showers, turning off lights and equipment when not in use, hybrid car)

“One green thing: Eat less meat -- especially red meat! Meat takes a
lot of water, grain, anti-biotics and fuel to create and ship. It is not
the most efficient way to eat protein. So, our family eats more whole
grains, nuts, and beans. We do eat chicken and turkey, milk products and
eggs, but in limited quantities. I’ve also heard pulling weeds is a good green thing.”
