Be Where Your Feet Are

Recently my sister-in-law has been faced with challenging news. Her father, whom we all adore, is in and out of the hospital with a life threatening situation.

This strong and proud man very quickly became ill and now relies on the doctors to correctly diagnose and cure his painful health issue.

The family has been asking for and receiving prayers from friends and extended family. They are grateful for the support they have received and have been excited witnesses to the power of prayer.

Kalli, my sister-in-law, shared something with me that another friend had given her as gentle advice.

"Be where your feet are."

Wow. It is so simple. So visual. So physical.

Kalli had been saying that she had become overwhelmed with her dad's sickness in the short few weeks that it all took place. As a mother of two young children, Kalli recognizes how important it is to be present with her children - even in the most difficult of times, but was finding that her mind continued to focus on and worry about her dad. She was quickly losing a grip on everything.

When her friend shared this wisdom, she immediately made the connection between her head, her body and God.

She is happy to report that she now simply looks down at her feet, several times a day, and says to herself, "Be where my feet are". With that, she is focused and centered on whatever is in front of her in that given moment... her children, a meal, her husband, her father, her mother, exercise, tending to her home, in prayer, settling into sleep for the night, etc.

As an integrative coach, I support clients in "being where their feet are"; but, I have to confess that I have never heard this level of "conscious awareness" stated so profoundly and so simply.

It has been just over a week since Kalli shared this phrase with me and since then, I have told this story to several friends and clients. We have all had a similar response, "WOW!"

Kalli,

Thank you for the reminder to be in the present moment - with my body, mind and spirit.

My prayers are with you, your dad and family.

I am grateful for this wisdom you've passed my way.

You (and your wise friend) are a beautiful example of God's light and love.
